A nitrogen-doped 1D macroporous carbonaceous nanotube array, combining the merits of the activation of the [small pi] electrons of a sp2 carbon array by N-doping and a large diameter of the nanotubes ([similar]200 nm), exhibits high performance for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR).
